Algebra 1

A one-year course through Algebra 1

An Algebra 1 course taught according to Charlotte Mason's principles using Elementary Algebra by Harold Jacobs.  This approach includes the introduction of "captain ideas" from great thinkers or from history to pique the interest of the students and grab their attention.  Through carefully graduated lessons, students are engaged and guided to wonder, explore, and consider concepts on their own.

This course constitutes one high school math credit.

Prerequisites: mastery of basic arithmetic, fractions, decimals, and percents

Structure:

  • Live, online class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1:00 - 2:00 central, via Zoom.

  • Assignments will be given to be completed independently on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

  • Short, pre-recorded videos will be posted on Mondays, covering topics students were struggling with that week, or an interesting illustration pertaining to that week's lessons.

Logistics: Class assignments and links will be posted in a Google Classroom to which students will be added.  In this environment, students have the opportunity to easily ask the teacher for help, converse with their classmates, as well as use Google tools to turn in assignments and re-watch lessons. The instructor will be available to answer questions, including personalized video answers to problems, as needed.

Dates: This is a 34-week course.  Fall semester runs from Sept 8 through Dec 17, with a week off for Thanksgiving break.  Spring semester runs Jan 3 through May 27, with a week off in March for spring break.
