Algebra 1A

The first part of a two-year course through Algebra 1

This course is full for the 21-22 school year.

If you are interested in being put on a waitlist for the course please fill out the registration form selecting the Algebra 1A waitlist.  Disregard the request for a registration fee.  It is not needed to be on a waitlist. If enough students are interested we may create another Algebra 1A class for the 21-22 school year.

A slower pace through Elementary Algebra by Harold Jacobs,

taught according to Charlotte Mason's principles.

This approach includes the introduction of "captain ideas" from great thinkers or from history to pique the interest of the students and grab their attention.  Through carefully graduated lessons, students are engaged and guided to wonder, explore, and consider concepts on their own.

This course constitutes one-half of a high school math credit.

It is designed for a middle school student in 7th grade or 8th grade, Form 3, to begin Algebra 1. However, we recognize that homeschoolers value flexibility in choosing the course of their education.  Thus, it is available for any student that would rather have a two-year course of algebra.

Algebra is the generalization of arithmetic.  There is value in a middle school student who is well prepared to begin learning the foundational concepts of algebra. Charlotte Mason advocated for students to begin different streams of mathematics studies at this age.  This class is meant to be the beginning of the algebra stream of study.

According to the CM math streams, a Form 3 student would also be working on arithmetic lessons and practical geometry lessons. The schedule for this class should allow for the time to independently incorporate these other math lessons in the week.

Prerequisites: mastery of basic arithmetic, fractions, decimals, and percents

Structure:

  • Live, online class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10:00-11:00 central, via Zoom.

  • Minimal or no assignments will be given to be completed outside of class time. (There will be periodic, graded exams assigned.)

  • Optional short, pre-recorded videos will be posted on Fridays, covering topics students were struggling with that week, or a logic problem pertaining to that week's lessons.

Logistics: Class videos and links will be posted in a Google Classroom to which students will be added.  In this environment, students have the opportunity to easily ask the teacher for help, converse with their classmates, as well as use Google tools to turn in assignments and re-watch lessons. The instructor will be available to answer questions, including personalized video answers to problems, as needed. Other days of the week are left open for additional, independent math studies (arithmetic and geometry).

Dates: This is a 34-week course.  Fall semester will run Sept 7 through Dec 17, with a week off for Thanksgiving break.  Spring semester will run Jan 3 through May 27, with a week off in March for spring break.
